The 80/20 redux

Last August I blogged about the 80/20 rule as it applies to a closet: we wear 20% of our clothes 80% of the time. Tis true. A way to combat this compulsion to put the same thing on again and again is to reverse the hangers when clothes are washed and ready to be worn again. I didn’t do this last summer and I had no intention of doing it in the winter. But now that spring is here, I’m trying.

And it’s hard! For starters, I don’t like reversed hangers. And I did give my crops, skirts, jeans, etc a bye. They can be worn multiple times, guilt-free. But my spring and summer tops are another issue. I like to buy on end of season sales. Sometimes simple little tee tops are drastically reduced, so why not buy two? Or three? What not indeed? And then, why not wear the same thing over and over?

I have already run through my basic blues and the whites are rapidly showing signs of hanger reversal. But it is making me think about why I never wore some things to get the monetary value, no matter how reasonable, out of them. If I get to the end of the season–that’s a long way away–and there’s still something hanging that hasn’t been worn and it’s not fit for a wedding or classy party, then it will have to go in the giveaway sack.
